Meeting Notes 2-25-13

 
Title 1 Parents Group – First meeting
Monday February 25th (10am and 6pm Sessions)
Facilitators:
-          Tammy & George Hodder, Parents Group chairmen
-          Joe Shirvinski, Principle GC Hartman elementary
Attendees:
Tammy, George and Mr. Shirvinski were at all sessions.
-          10AM Session
o   Jen Meyers

o   Michele and Joe Lynch
o   Renee Brown
Action Items:
-          Scan copies of title 1 handout materials and post to the blog
-          Add a link for Tumble books to the blog
-          Add a link for the conversion of book levels A-Z to numeric.
-          Add a page for Definition of common title 1 terms
-          Complete mission statement
-          Solicit volunteers for future plans
Agenda and notes:
-          Review Title 1 Resources available to Parents
o   Cubs Corner
§  Available to all title 1 parents. 
§  Currently have items such as letter tiles, games, a tape recorder, magazines, and pre-recorded stories.  Parents may sign out items at any time. 
§  They also have the program Read Rabbit’s Interactive Reading Journey available for weekend use for families with Macintosh computer with a CD Drive
o   Parent Resource Center
§  Green flyer given in our Title 1 materials at the beginning of the year.  Allows parents to order up to 10 books/pamphlets for helpful information on many issues facing parents/students of all ages and situations
o   SPAC website
§  SPAC is the state parent advisory council.  Their site has other resources available to our parent group. We’ll link to their page on the blog.
 
-          Develop a mission statement
o   Some ideas we wanted in our mission statement
§  Support Title 1 students and teachers
§  Improve confidence, self-esteem, reading (level as well as comprehension )
§  Give parents the ability to give the same styp of instruction @ home as in school
§  Knowledge of resources for parents
§  Be advocates for our children
o   We still need to fashion this into a statement that can be our mission.
 
-          Open discussion
o   Ideas for parents participation in classes
§  Organize observation of students in class either in person or via video
§  Have parents visit title 1 class to read to students
§  Parents night with teachers…
·         Teachers could have stations to show parents the different skills they teach students.. and how they teach it
 
o   Ideas for Blog (web page)
§  Post sight words list for all classes
§  Scan current title 1 documents to the web
§  Post links for book “level” cross reference (done)
§  Link to Tumble books
§  Create a page with common terms for title 1 and their meaning
§  Link information for dyslexia
§  Information on how to read Diebels results
 
o   Ideas for correspondence
§  Give feedback on letters/handouts etc we receive to help teachers change the wording in ways parents can better understand
 
-          Future plans for group
o   Build a library of information/resources for title 1 families
§  We’ll post a call for volunteers for a library committee
o   Create summer activities to help bridge summer months and keep title 1 kids sharp on their skills
§  Summer fun reading checklist (like scavenger hunt.. or read to your pet..etc)
§  Book club
§  Contact Elysburg/Bloom Library for info on summer programs
§  Create a ring binder of boxes (cake, cereal etc.. for kids to read) as summer project
§  Student makes own word search or crossword puzzle
§  We’ll post a call for volunteers for a summer activity committee
 
o   Have a representative attend HART and board meetings on behalf of parent group
 
o   Come up with a name for our Group!
